The Eagles' options have become predetermined with Steve Spagnuolo 's decision to take the Saints' defensive coordinator job. Spagnuolo had been a seeker to return to the Eagles, where he previously coached the linebackers before taking the Giants' coordinator job in 2007, to run the defense.

Embattled Juan Castillo worn out a season deflecting negative attention heaped on his defense as a first-year coordinator with the Eagles getting off to a 4-8 start and showing for inconsistencies throughout the campaign on that side of the ball.

But a late-season surge during the tandem join up's 4-0 finish — that included head coach Andy Reid getting more implicated with the defense — could help allow Castillo another shot. He was torment initially by the lockout, which prevented him from working with his personnel closely and having a straight period of time to work to implement his scheme.
