Sanborn said he at wanted to use brass, but decided to go with a silver color because it would better juxtapose the hardware used in most sports helmets. The lampshades he uses are made of colourless, white linen from the New Brunswick Lamp Shade Company in New Jersey.
Sanborn assembles each lamp separately, and each is tested safe by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. He said the lamps officially received the presuming UL seal just after Christmas.
Only about a month after Sanborn developed the first prototypes, he traveled to New York to muster with the collectibles division of Riddell, the official provider of helmets for the Jingoistic Football League.
